PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies host the Athletics on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, where the forecast calls for 79-degree temperatures and clouds. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs (3-2, 3.86 ERA) will start for Oakland (18-16), while right-hander Zack Wheeler (1-0, 1.29 ERA) goes for Philadelphia (15-20). Wheeler has made only two starts this season because of an early-season injury, but he has allowed just two earned runs over 14 innings. The Phillies took the series opener 1-0 on Tuesday, a tightly contested game that extended their winning streak to two games. Philadelphia enters on a high after a 1-0 victory at Miami on Monday, backed by Aaron Nola’s six-inning, five-strikeout gem and Bryce Harper’s solo home run. Oakland bounced back from three straight losses to Cleveland by winning the series finale against the Guardians 7-1 on Sunday. In that game, right-hander Aaron Civale pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts. Civale is a player to watch even when not pitching; he has been Oakland’s most consistent arm this month, posting a 1.65 ERA over his past three starts despite a 1-2 record in that span. For the Phillies, right-hander Aaron Nola remains a key figure after his shut-down outing in Miami, but Wednesday’s matchup features Wheeler, who has historically been tough on Oakland. In the Phillies’ lineup, Harper has been the offensive engine, going 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI in the win against the Marlins. The Athletics’ offense has been streaky. Tyler Soderstrom homered in Sunday’s win, and Jeff McNeil drove in three runs, but Oakland has scored two or fewer runs in four of its past seven games. The Phillies’ pitching staff, by contrast, has allowed only one run over the past two games. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Phillies victory. The series concludes Thursday before Oakland heads to Baltimore for a three-game set and Philadelphia hosts Colorado for a weekend series.
