ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners aim to secure a second straight win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium III, with rain in the forecast and temperatures near 73 degrees. Right-hander Matthew Liberatore (0-1) is scheduled to start for Seattle, which enters with a 12-15 record. Liberatore will make his second appearance of the season after taking a loss in his debut. The Cardinals (14-11) had not announced a starter at press time. Seattle won Friday’s series opener 3-2 behind a strong outing from George Kirby, who allowed two earned runs over six innings with two strikeouts. Andrés Muñoz recorded a hold with a scoreless seventh, and Matt Brash closed the ninth for the save. Kirby has been Seattle’s most consistent arm, posting a 2-2 record over his past five starts with a 3.24 ERA. He tossed at least six innings in four of those outings, including a complete-game effort against Houston on April 13. St. Louis’ Andre Pallante took the loss Friday despite striking out eight over 5.1 innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits. Over his past five starts, Pallante is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA, though he has shown command with 20 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. The Cardinals have dropped two of their last three overall but remain atop the National League Central. According to Interstat’s game simulator, St. Louis is projected to win 5-3. However, the ELO system gives Seattle a 54 percent probability of victory. Seattle opened as a -1.5 favorite in the betting market, with an over/under of 8. The Mariners have won four of their last six and are coming off a three-game split with Oakland. St. Louis took two of three from Miami before losing Friday. After Saturday, the teams conclude the series Sunday. Seattle then travels to Minnesota for a three-game set beginning Monday. St. Louis heads to Pittsburgh for four games before returning home to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 1.
