PREVIEW: Tigers at Reds CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds continue their weekend series Saturday afternoon at Great American Ball Park, with first pitch scheduled for 4:10 p.m. EDT under rainy skies and a temperature of 67 degrees. Detroit (14-12) enters following a 5-4 win over Milwaukee on Thursday, a game in which left-hander Tarik Skubal earned the victory. Skubal has been dominant of late, winning three consecutive decisions — including a 6-inning, 10-strikeout performance April 18 at Boston. Riley Greene homered and drove in two runs in that win over the Brewers. The Tigers will send either Jack Flaherty (0-1) or Brady Singer (1-1) to the mound. Flaherty has struggled early, while Singer has been more reliable. The team’s rotation situation remains fluid. Cincinnati (16-9) owns the best record in the National League Central and is coming off a 6-1 loss Wednesday at Tampa Bay. The Reds have won six of their last eight. Right-hander Connor Phillips is a key arm out of the Cincinnati bullpen. Phillips has appeared in 10 games this season, posting a 2.79 ERA with 10 strikeouts over 12 innings. He has allowed just one earned run in his last seven outings. The Tigers won Friday night’s series opener, 8-7, behind a balanced attack. That victory snapped a two-game skid for Detroit, which had dropped three of four before Thursday. Detroit’s Skubal, who is not scheduled to pitch Saturday, has been the staff ace. Over his last three starts, he has pitched 18 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs with 22 strikeouts. His lone loss this season came April 7 at Minnesota. Cincinnati’s offense has been productive, averaging 5.2 runs per game. The Reds have scored at least five runs in 11 of their last 14 contests. The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-6 Cincinnati victory, while Interstat’s ELO system gives the Reds a 52.3% win probability. Detroit is a -1.5 favorite on the run line, and the over/under is set at 9.5 runs. Following Saturday’s contest, the teams close the series Sunday in Cincinnati. The Tigers then travel to Atlanta for a three-game set starting Tuesday, while the Reds host Colorado for three games beginning Tuesday. Detroit’s next 10 games include series against the Braves, Rangers and Red Sox. Cincinnati faces the Rockies, Pirates and Cubs over the same stretch. Notes: Detroit’s Riley Greene is hitting .310 with four homers and 15 RBIs. Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz leads the team with a .325 average and six stolen bases.
