PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Sparks visit the Portland Fire on Sunday in a WNBA matchup at Moda Center, with both teams trying to halt losing streaks. The Los Angeles Sparks (10-17) have lost six straight. The Portland Fire (11-18) have lost three in a row. The Sparks won the most recent meeting, beating the Fire 89-72 on June 7 in Los Angeles. Interstat’s game simulator projects a close result: Los Angeles 100, Portland 97. Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike has been the anchor for Los Angeles. Over her last nine games, she has averaged 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists. In the Sparks’ most recent game, a 113-109 loss to New York on July 28, Ogwumike had 21 points, four rebounds and nine assists. She also posted double-doubles in losses to Phoenix (13 points, 13 rebounds) on July 22 and Minnesota (23 points, 12 rebounds) on July 15. Portland will lean on guard Carla Leite, who has averaged 15.3 points and 7.4 assists over her last eight games. Leite was particularly effective in the Fire’s 112-98 loss to Indiana on July 31, finishing with 20 points and 12 assists. She also handed out 11 assists against Dallas on July 22 and 10 assists against Atlanta on July 11. Both teams have shown recent defensive issues. The Sparks have allowed 100 or more points in two of their last six games, while the Fire have given up at least 98 points in each of their last four. The Sparks have been competitive despite their skid, with five of their six losses during the current streak decided by nine points or fewer. The Fire also have been involved in close games, including a 97-101 loss to Dallas on July 22 and an 87-90 loss to Connecticut on July 14. After Sunday, Los Angeles travels to Chicago to face the Sky on Wednesday. Portland hosts Toronto on Thursday.
