WNBA: Wings at Tempo TORONTO (Interstat) — The Dallas Wings look to extend their winning streak against the Toronto Tempo on Friday night at Coca-Cola Coliseum, but a resurgent Toronto squad aims to flip the script after a lopsided loss just five days ago. Dallas (14-8) enters on a two-game roll, most recently dismantling the New York Liberty 88-77 on Tuesday. Forward Jessica Shepard anchored that win with a triple-double (Interstat) — 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists (Interstat) — her third double-double in four games and second in as many contests. Over her last 10 outings, Shepard has averaged 15.7 points and 11.7 rebounds, shooting efficiently while also dishing 4.8 assists per game. Her versatility will be critical against a Toronto defense that allowed 89 points in Sunday’s 89-76 loss to Dallas. Toronto (9-11) has split its past four games but showed explosive offensive capability in a 125-97 rout of Los Angeles on June 25, when guard Marina Mabrey erupted for a career-high 53 points on 18-of-28 shooting, including 11 three-pointers. Mabrey followed that with 37 points against Connecticut and 23 against Atlanta, though she managed 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting in the loss to Dallas. Her scoring consistency has been a bright spot for a Tempo team that ranks among the league’s highest-scoring units but struggles defensively (Interstat) — allowing 100-plus points in three of its past five defeats. Friday’s matchup marks the second of four meetings this season between the Wings and Tempo. Dallas won the first meeting 89-76 behind Shepard’s 14 points and 15 rebounds. The Wings also got 10 points and seven assists from guard Paige Bueckers, who paired with Shepard to control the pace. For Toronto, forward Nyara Sabally (14 points, seven rebounds) and Mabrey provided the primary offensive thrust. The Tempo, however, will have home-court advantage and the memory of a 125-point outburst earlier this season. Toronto has won five of its last six at Coca-Cola Coliseum, while Dallas is 6-4 on the road. The Wings have leaned on a balanced attack (Interstat) — Shepard, Bueckers and forward Awak Kuier each scored in double figures in Tuesday’s win (Interstat) — and will face a Toronto defense that ranks near the bottom in points allowed. A computer simulation by Interstat projects a 104-101 victory for Toronto, but Dallas’ recent defensive discipline (Interstat) — holding opponents to 82.8 points per game over its past five (Interstat) — suggests a tighter contest. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET. The Wings then host Chicago on Sunday, while Toronto welcomes New York.
