TORONTO (Interstat) — The Golden State Valkyries will look to extend their recent hot streak when they face the Toronto Tempo on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EDT. Golden State (14-7) has won seven of its last eight games, most recently defeating the Atlanta Dream 88-83 on the road Saturday. The Valkyries sit near the top of the WNBA standings and are riding a wave of balanced scoring and defensive tenacity. Toronto (9-11) is coming off a 89-76 home loss to the Dallas Wings on Sunday, dropping its second straight contest. The Tempo have shown flashes of explosive offense, including a 125-point outburst against Los Angeles on June 25, but have struggled for consistency. Valkyries guard Veronica Burton has been a catalyst for Golden State’s surge. In Saturday’s win over Atlanta, Burton logged 31 minutes and posted 21 points, one rebound, five assists and one steal. Over her last 10 games, the floor general has averaged 11.3 points and 5.0 assists while playing heavy minutes, including a 25-point, eight-assist performance against Phoenix on June 9 and a near triple-double (11 points, eight rebounds, five assists) against Dallas on June 17. Burton’s ability to push the tempo and create opportunities for teammates like forward Gabby Williams — who scored 19 points Saturday — will be critical against a Toronto defense that has allowed 102 points or more in three of its last five games. On the Toronto side, guard Marina Mabrey remains the Tempo’s primary scoring threat. Despite the loss to Dallas, Mabrey contributed 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal in 31 minutes. Her scoring outbursts have defined Toronto’s season: she erupted for a staggering 53 points on June 25 against the Los Angeles Sparks, hitting 10 of 16 from 3-point range, and added 37 points against Connecticut on June 19. Mabrey has scored at least 18 points in five of her last seven games, and her perimeter shooting — she made 10 3-pointers in that 53-point game — is the Tempo’s most potent weapon. However, she has also been prone to high-volume, inefficient nights, shooting 34% from the field in the loss to Indiana on June 16. The Valkyries have been strong on the road this season, posting a 7-3 record away from home. Toronto is 5-6 at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Interstat’s game simulator projects a close contest, with Toronto winning 104-101. These teams will meet again Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 at Golden State.
