WNBA: Tempo at Liberty Preview NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Toronto Tempo visit the New York Liberty on Wednesday at Barclays Center in a matchup of WNBA teams tied at 5-4, each seeking to build momentum after home victories Saturday. Toronto (5-4) defeated the Seattle Storm 93-72 on May 30, its second straight win after a three-game road losing streak. The Tempo are 3-2 away from home this season. New York (5-4) beat the Phoenix Mercury 75-68 on May 29, snapping a three-game skid. The Liberty are 2-1 at Barclays Center. Toronto guard Kiki Rice has been a consistent producer. In Saturday’s win, Rice logged 28 minutes, scoring 17 points with six rebounds and one assist. Over her past five games, the guard has averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting efficiently. She scored 19 points in a May 23 loss to Portland, 14 points and eight rebounds in a May 27 win over Chicago, and 11 points in a May 21 loss to Minnesota. Rice has reached double figures in seven of nine games this season. New York guard Pauline Astier leads the Liberty’s backcourt. In the win over Phoenix, she posted 16 points, six rebounds and six assists in 31 minutes. Astier’s production has been volatile: She scored 20 points in a May 14 win at Portland and 24 in a May 12 loss at Portland, but she has been held to four or seven points in three of her past five games. Her playmaking remains critical (Interstat) — she had seven assists in a May 10 overtime win at Washington. Toronto’s balanced attack Saturday featured Laura Juskaite (14 points, five rebounds) and Maria Conde (13 points, six rebounds). The Tempo average 88.7 points per game but allow 90.4. New York relies on Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who had 13 points in 15 minutes against Phoenix, and center Jonquel Jones, who posted nine points and nine rebounds. The Liberty average 79.1 points while surrendering 81.0. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 92-81 Liberty victory. Following Wednesday’s game, Toronto returns home to host Chicago on June 7. New York hosts Indiana on June 6 before a three-game road trip.
