LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Two winless WNBA teams meet Friday night when the Toronto Tempo visit the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena. Both clubs dropped their season openers. Toronto fell 68-65 to the Washington Mystics on May 8, while Los Angeles lost 105-78 to the Las Vegas Aces on May 10. Guard Marina Mabrey leads the Tempo after posting 27 points, seven rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes against Washington. Nyara Sabally added eight points and six rebounds, and Laura Juskaite chipped in seven points and six rebounds off the bench. The Sparks will rely on forward Nneka Ogwumike, who recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Las Vegas. Guard Kelsey Plum scored 27 points with four rebounds and two assists, and guard Ariel Atkins contributed eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Toronto (0-1) looks to establish an inside presence after being outrebounded by Washington. The Tempo also struggled from the field, shooting 38% overall. Los Angeles (0-1) allowed 105 points and will need to tighten its defense, particularly against Mabrey’s perimeter scoring. Ogwumike, a former league MVP, remains the focal point of the Sparks’ offense. Her ability to stretch the floor and crash the boards will test a Toronto frontcourt that gave up 68 points to the Mystics. Friday’s game begins a three-game set between the teams in Los Angeles. They meet again Saturday and Sunday before Toronto embarks on a road trip to Phoenix and Minnesota. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. PDT.
