SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The New York Knicks will try to close out the Western Conference finals Saturday night when they face the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 at Frost Bank Center. New York holds a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series after a dramatic 107-106 victory Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. Jalen Brunson scored 36 points and added five rebounds and seven assists in 44 minutes for the Knicks, who have won three of four meetings with the Spurs this postseason. The Knicks (69-33) have been fueled by Brunson’s consistent production. Over his last eight playoff games, the guard has averaged 27.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists while playing at least 35 minutes each contest. He recorded 30 points in Game 1, 20 in Game 2 and 32 in Game 3. San Antonio (75-30) faces elimination after dropping consecutive one-possession decisions. The Spurs had won Game 3 in New York 115-111, but lost a back-and-forth Game 4 despite 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks from Victor Wembanyama. The forward has been a force throughout the series, averaging 27.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in four games against the Knicks. Wembanyama posted 32 points and eight rebounds in Game 3 and 29 points with nine rebounds and four blocks in Game 2. The 7-foot-4 sophomore will need another dominant performance to extend San Antonio’s season. The Spurs’ depth has been tested. Devin Vassell scored 18 points and De’Aaron Fox added 18 points and seven assists in Game 4. San Antonio’s offense has struggled to maintain leads, particularly late in games. New York has received strong contributions from OG Anunoby (33 points in Game 4) and Karl-Anthony Towns (13 points, 10 rebounds). The Knicks’ defense limited San Antonio to 95 points in each of the first two games in Texas. Game 5 tips off at 8:30 p.m. EDT. The Interstat game simulator projects a 121-108 Spurs victory, but New York has won three straight in San Antonio this season, including Games 1 and 2 by a combined 11 points. If necessary, Game 6 would be Tuesday in New York.
