TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The Tampa Bay Rays, owners of the American League’s best record, will host the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night at George Steinbrenner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with the forecast calling for 87-degree heat and cloudy skies. The Rays (62-43) are coming off a 1-0 shutout victory Sunday against Cleveland, a game in which right-hander Drew Rasmussen was dominant. He threw seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine without allowing a run. It was the latest stellar outing in an otherwise inconsistent July for Rasmussen, who also allowed two earned runs over five innings in a win at Toronto on July 21 but was tagged for six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Yankees on July 9. Texas (54-52) is two games below .500 and trying to climb back into the wild-card picture. The Rangers took the series opener Tuesday, beating the Rays 3-1. On Monday, they routed Seattle 7-3 behind a huge game from designated hitter Joc Pederson, who went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Pederson has been on a tear, homering in three of his past four games and posting six hits in his last 16 at-bats with four extra-base hits dating back to July 24. Tampa Bay will counter with a bullpen game or a yet-to-be-named starter, though Rasmussen’s Sunday start likely pushes him back in the rotation. The Rays’ offense, despite the win Sunday, managed only one run and has scored three or fewer in four of their last seven games. Texas will send a starter to be determined, though right-hander Kumar Rocker — who threw 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball Monday — won’t be available on short rest. The Rays are listed as a pregame favorite with a run line of -1.5, and the over/under is set at 7.5 runs. Wednesday’s game is the second of a four-game series.
