CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians open a pivotal four-game series Monday night at Progressive Field, with both teams jockeying for position in the American League Central. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. under clear skies and 76 degrees. Minnesota (49-51) enters having lost six of its last seven, including a 10-1 drubbing Sunday at Chicago. Cleveland (52-48) is coming off a 7-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday, dropping three of its last four. Right-hander Travis Adams is scheduled to start for the Twins. Adams has worked exclusively out of the bullpen this season and has been effective in limited duty. In his last outing Sunday, he threw three innings of one-hit relief with two strikeouts. Over his previous six appearances, Adams has allowed just two earned runs in 9 2/3 innings, striking out 10. Left-hander Joey Cantillo gets the nod for Cleveland. Cantillo has been a reliable arm in the rotation, despite suffering the loss in his last start July 19 against Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. He fared well against the Twins on July 7, giving up no earned runs on six hits in five innings, but took the loss. The Guardians have won the season series 4-2, taking two of three in Minnesota earlier this month. The Twins, however, took the final two games of a three-game set at Progressive Field in early May. Minnesota looks to build on solid relief work from left-hander Kody Funderburk and right-hander Woo-Suk Go, who combined for two scoreless innings Sunday. Cleveland will rely on its bullpen depth, including right-hander Hunter Gaddis, who pitched a scoreless inning Sunday. The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-5 Twins victory. Minnesota is a -1.5 favorite on the run line, with the over/under set at 7.5 runs. Following Monday’s opener, the teams continue the series Tuesday and Wednesday before the Twins host the Athletics on Friday and the Guardians travel to Tampa Bay.
