ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Two last-place teams desperate for traction meet Saturday night when the Detroit Tigers visit the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. Detroit (44-52) sends left-hander Tarik Skubal (5-5) to the mound opposite Angels right-hander José Soriano. First pitch is at 7:07 p.m. PDT. Skubal aims to rebound from a 5-0 loss to Philadelphia on July 12, allowing two earned runs over five innings with five strikeouts. He won his two previous starts — 6-2 against Oakland and 9-3 at Yankee Stadium — posting a 1.64 ERA over 11 innings with 18 strikeouts. Overall, Skubal has 36 strikeouts across his last four outings. Soriano (0-3 in his last four decisions) has lost three consecutive starts. He lasted five innings at Minnesota on July 12, giving up three runs. In his prior start at Texas, he allowed two runs over six innings but took the loss. He has not earned a victory since June 24 against Baltimore. The Angels (38-59) have dropped six of seven and are last in the AL West. They enter after a 4-2 loss at Minnesota. The Tigers, fourth in the AL Central, were shut out in consecutive games by Philadelphia on July 11-12 after taking two of three from Oakland and sweeping a doubleheader at Texas. Friday’s series opener between these clubs was suspended scoreless in the top of the first inning. The Angels won the previous meeting, 7-1 in Detroit on May 28. The Tigers took the next two games in that late-May series, 4-0 and 10-6. Detroit has outscored opponents 41-22 during a recent 6-3 stretch. The Angels have been outscored 39-19 during their current 2-7 skid. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 Tigers victory. Detroit is a -1.5 run-line favorite. The over/under is 8. After Saturday, the teams finish their series Sunday afternoon. Detroit then travels to Chicago to face the Cubs on Monday. The Angels host the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
