SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres meet Sunday afternoon at PETCO Park for the series finale, with both clubs jockeying for position in the National League wild-card race. Toronto (45-49) and San Diego (46-48) enter separated by a half-game in the standings. The teams played to a scoreless tie Saturday — an unusual deadlock — after Toronto won the series opener 5-3 on Friday. The pitching matchup Sunday is a rematch of that Friday contest: Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber against Padres left-hander JP Sears. Bieber (6-8, 4.82 ERA) earned the win in that start, allowing two earned runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. He has been inconsistent recently, going 1-3 with a 7.93 ERA over his last four outings. He was tagged for seven runs in four innings July 4 at Seattle. Sears (7-7, 4.51 ERA) took the loss Friday, yielding three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. His recent form has been erratic as well. He threw five shutout innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 5, but allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs on June 30. Blue Jays third baseman Kazuma Okamoto provided the big hit Friday, homering and driving in three runs. Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts homered and drove in two in the loss. The forecast calls for 78 degrees and cloudy at first pitch. Toronto is a minus-1.5 favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, with an over/under of 8 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Toronto victory. The Blue Jays have won five of their last eight games. The Padres have lost seven of their last 10, including three of four to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week. Toronto has taken two of three head-to-head meetings this season, all at PETCO Park. Following this series, Toronto returns home for a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox beginning July 17. San Diego starts a road trip July 17 in Kansas City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT.
