CHICAGO CUBS AT CINCINNATI REDS CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs, winners of 52 games and sitting comfortably above .500, visit Great American Ball Park on Saturday to face the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT with a forecast of 83 degrees and rain. Chicago (52-41) will start left-hander David Peterson. The 30-year-old has been inconsistent over his past three outings. He took a no-decision in a 2-3 loss at Baltimore on Thursday, allowing one earned run over five innings with two strikeouts. That followed a rough outing July 3 against St. Louis, where he surrendered 10 earned runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Peterson’s best recent start came June 27 at Milwaukee, where he allowed two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in an 8-2 Cubs win. Cincinnati (42-50) counters with right-hander Brady Singer. Singer has pitched well but has little to show for it, dropping his last four decisions. He threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings June 22 against Milwaukee, allowing only two hits, but took a hard-luck loss Thursday against Philadelphia, giving up one run over 7 1/3 innings while striking out five. Singer has been a victim of poor run support, with the Reds scoring a combined one run in his past two starts. The Cubs have dominated the season series, sweeping a four-game set in Cincinnati from May 4-7. Chicago outscored the Reds 23-15 in that series, winning each game by one or two runs. The series opener Friday was scoreless before it was suspended or postponed (no result available). Chicago enters with momentum, having taken two of three from Baltimore. Outfielder Seiya Suzuki was productive in Thursday’s loss, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The Cubs have won five of their past seven games. Cincinnati dropped two of three to Philadelphia, managing just one run in two of those games. The Reds have lost six of their past eight. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Cubs victory. Chicago is a -1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 10 runs. Following Saturday’s game, the teams conclude the series Sunday before Chicago returns home to host Minnesota and Cincinnati travels to Colorado.
