SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres continue their four-game series Wednesday night at PETCO Park, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. PDT. Arizona (45-45) sits at .500 and in third place in the National League West. San Diego (44-46) is one game behind the Diamondbacks, tied for fourth. The series is knotted at 1-0 after Monday’s opener. Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (2-0 in his past two starts) takes the mound for Arizona. He threw five innings of four-hit, shutout ball in Monday’s 8-0 victory over the Padres, striking out six. In his prior outing June 30 against San Francisco, Pfaadt allowed one earned run over 5 1/3 innings, striking out two. He has been Arizona’s most consistent starter during a stretch that has seen the Diamondbacks win four of their past six. San Diego counters with right-hander Alek Jacob, who also appeared Monday. Jacob allowed one earned run on two hits over three innings, striking out three. It was his first appearance since June 28. The Padres have dropped four of their past five games, including a 23-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on July 1. San Diego’s bullpen has been taxed, with relievers covering 16 innings over the past three games. Monday’s game featured a dominant Arizona attack. Max Kepler went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Ryan Thompson threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts in relief. The Diamondbacks pounded Padres starter Walker Buehler for seven earned runs in five innings. The season series is split at 1-1. Arizona won 12-7 in San Diego on April 26; San Diego took a 6-4 decision the previous day. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-2 Arizona victory. Arizona’s upcoming schedule includes a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Friday, followed by a seven-game homestand against St. Louis and the Athletics. San Diego hosts Toronto for a three-game set starting Friday before traveling to Kansas City and Atlanta.
