MLB Preview: Diamondbacks at Padres SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Two teams separated by a half-game in the National League West standings meet Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. PDT. Arizona (44-45) enters the series finale having dropped two of three to Milwaukee. The Diamondbacks lost 3-2 on Sunday despite left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez’s solid start. Rodriguez (4-4, 2.45 ERA) allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Rodriguez has been Arizona’s most consistent starter over the past month. In his last five outings, he owns a 1.42 ERA with 17 strikeouts across 29 1/3 innings. He earned wins in four consecutive starts from June 12 through June 29 before Sunday’s loss. San Diego (43-45) has lost four straight games and seven of its last eight. The Padres were shut out 3-0 on Saturday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, managing only three hits. Right-hander Griffin Canning (2-5, 5.73 ERA) will start for San Diego. He has struggled with command and length in recent appearances, lasting four innings or fewer in three of his last four starts. In a 7-6 win over Atlanta on June 23, he recorded just two outs while allowing four earned runs. The teams split a two-game series in Arizona on April 25-26. San Diego won 6-4 on April 25, and Arizona answered with a 12-7 victory the next day. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Arizona win. Arizona’s offense has been inconsistent, scoring three runs or fewer in three of its last four games. The Diamondbacks will face a Padres bullpen that has allowed 18 earned runs over its last 19 innings. San Diego’s lineup has gone silent during its losing streak, plating three runs or fewer in five of the past six games. The four-game series continues Tuesday and Wednesday before both teams travel. Arizona visits Los Angeles for three games, while San Diego returns home to host Toronto for a three-game set.
