TORONTO (Interstat) — The Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays, both stuck at 39-42, will meet in a split doubleheader Saturday at Rogers Centre, with implications for the American League wild-card race already mounting. The two-game set, scheduled for an afternoon contest followed by an evening game, comes after Texas took the first two games of this four-game series. The Rangers defeated Toronto 5-0 on Friday and 6-5 on Thursday. Texas has won three of its last four overall, while the Blue Jays have dropped three straight. Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (2-3, 4.18 ERA) is expected to start one of the doubleheader games for Texas. Gore earned the win Thursday against Toronto, allowing three earned runs on four hits over seven innings in the Rangers’ 6-5 victory. He has posted a 3.60 ERA across his past two starts, striking out 11 in 13 innings, but has surrendered four earned runs in two of his last three outings. Right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (1-2, 3.86 ERA) will likely take the ball for Toronto in one of Saturday’s games. Woods Richardson worked three scoreless innings of relief Thursday against Texas, allowing no hits and striking out one. He has not allowed an earned run over his past seven innings, spanning three appearances, but has not thrown more than four innings in any outing this season. Offensively, Texas will rely on center fielder Wyatt Langford, who homered and drove in three runs Thursday, and first baseman Jake Burger, who went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in the same game. For Toronto, third baseman Kazuma Okamoto homered and drove in two runs Thursday, while center fielder Myles Straw added two RBIs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Toronto victory, but the Blue Jays will need to reverse their recent fortunes against Texas pitching. The Rangers have held Toronto to five runs over the first two games of the series. Both clubs remain tied for the third wild-card spot, 2½ games back of the final playoff position. The doubleheader offers a chance for one team to gain ground before the All-Star break approaches. Following Saturday’s twin bill, the teams wrap up the series Sunday afternoon. Texas then travels to Cleveland for a three-game set beginning Monday, while Toronto hosts the New York Mets for three games starting Monday.
