AP Sports Preview: Cubs at Giants SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants conclude their four-game series Saturday at Oracle Park, with the Cubs aiming to build on a strong road trip and the Giants seeking to break out of a slump. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. EDT. Chicago (35-34) will start right-hander Ben Brown (2-2) on Saturday. The Giants (28-41) have not announced their probable pitcher. Brown has been inconsistent this season, but the Cubs are coming off a 9-3 win at Colorado on Thursday, when Edward Cabrera tossed 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts. Cabrera, however, is not scheduled to pitch in this game. San Francisco dropped three of four at Washington earlier this week, including a 10-9 loss Wednesday despite a huge game from Matt Chapman, who went 4 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs. Chapman has been one of the few bright spots for the Giants, batting .333 over his last 10 games with four home runs and 15 RBIs. He particularly tormented Cubs pitching in a 18-3 blowout at Wrigley Field on June 5, going 2 for 3 with two homers and eight RBIs. The Cubs’ lineup features Seiya Suzuki, who drove in four runs Thursday, and Alex Bregman, who homered in that game. Chicago has won three of its last four after dropping four straight. The two teams split a three-game set at Chicago last weekend. The Giants won 2-1 in 10 innings on June 7, while the Cubs took the middle game 3-2 in 10 innings. Friday’s scheduled series opener in San Francisco was postponed (scoreless, no details provided). Saturday’s game features an interesting contrast: the Cubs have a plus-12 run differential, while the Giants are minus-48. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 win for San Francisco, but oddsmakers have installed Chicago as a -1.5 favorite, with an over/under of 7.5. After Saturday, the Cubs travel to Colorado for three games starting Monday, then host Toronto. The Giants host Atlanta for three games beginning Tuesday before a six-game road trip to Miami and Oakland. For the Cubs, Brown will need to keep Chapman in check if they hope to continue their upward trend. For the Giants, any sort of win would be a boost for a last-place club that has lost 12 of 16.
