PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies host the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park, looking to build on a tense series opener that ended in a 2-2 tie on Tuesday. First-place Philadelphia (30-29) will start left-hander Cristopher Sánchez (6-2, 3.12 ERA), who has been the club’s most consistent starter. Sánchez is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his past four outings. San Diego (32-26) counters with right-hander Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.50 ERA), who is seeking his first win since May 10. The weather forecast calls for 76 degrees and cloudy skies at first pitch. The Padres arrive having lost four of their past five games, including a 4-2 defeat at Washington on Sunday. Right-hander Griffin Canning has struggled mightily in that stretch, losing all five of his May starts while posting an 8.76 ERA across 22⅔ innings. He lasted just 1⅔ innings against Milwaukee on May 14, allowing six earned runs. Philadelphia dropped the finale of its West Coast trip 9-1 to the Dodgers on Sunday, but had won three in a row before that defeat. Second baseman Bryson Stott homered in that game — his first extra-base hit in 10 games. For the month of May, Stott is batting .228 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. The Phillies have dominated the season series, winning three of four meetings in San Diego from May 25-27 before Tuesday’s tie. Philadelphia outscored the Padres 10-3 in that sweep, holding San Diego scoreless in two of the three games. San Diego’s offense has managed just 11 runs over its past five games. The Padres have not scored more than four runs in any of their past eight contests. Philadelphia has been installed as a -1.5 run-line favorite. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Phillies victory. The over/under is set at seven total runs. Following Wednesday’s game, the teams meet again Thursday to close the two-game series. Philadelphia then opens a three-game home set against the Chicago White Sox, while San Diego returns home to face the New York Mets.
