PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — A week after sweeping the Padres in San Diego, the Phillies return home to host them Tuesday night in the opener of a pivotal four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies and 67 degrees. Philadelphia (30-29) took all three games from San Diego at Petco Park from May 25-27, outscoring the Padres 10-3 in that series. The Phillies enter Tuesday having lost four of their last five, including a 9-1 defeat Sunday at the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego (32-26) arrives in Philadelphia having lost four of its last five, capped by a 4-2 loss Sunday at Washington. Right-hander Randy Vásquez (5-3) gets the start for San Diego. He will be opposed by Philadelphia right-hander Aaron Nola (3-4). The Phillies’ bullpen has been a strength, but the offense has struggled for consistency. Second baseman Bryson Stott, a player to watch for Philadelphia, hit a solo home run in Sunday’s loss but went 0-for-12 in the three-game series at San Diego last week. In his last 10 games, Stott is batting .167 (5-for-30) with two RBIs and one home run. San Diego’s Griffin Canning is a player to watch for the Padres. The right-hander has lost his last five decisions, including a 3-0 loss to the Phillies on May 25 in which he allowed three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. In his most recent outing Sunday against the Nationals, Canning took a 4-2 loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits over five innings with three strikeouts. The last time these teams met, Philadelphia won 3-0 on May 27 behind a strong pitching performance and timely hitting. The Phillies also won 4-3 on May 26 and 3-0 on May 25. The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-3 Philadelphia victory. The Phillies have been installed as pregame favorites with a spread of minus-1.5. The over/under for the game is 8 runs. After Tuesday, the teams play again Wednesday and Thursday before the Padres return home to host the New York Mets for a three-game series beginning Friday. The Phillies host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game set starting Friday.
