Chicago is coming off a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Sunday, while Oakland dropped a 13-8 decision at home against the New York Yankees on the same day. Right-hander Gage Jump (0-1) is scheduled to start for the Athletics. He will be opposed by Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-4, 4.50 ERA). Players to watch Athletics catcher Jonah Heim has been the team’s most productive hitter in recent games. Heim is 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs over his past two games after going 1 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs in Sunday’s loss to the Yankees. He is hitting .269 with seven homers and 28 RBIs this season. Cubs reliever Trent Thornton has been sharp out of the bullpen. Over his past three appearances, Thornton has allowed zero earned runs over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. He worked two scoreless innings with one strikeout in Sunday’s loss at St. Louis. Recent trends Oakland has lost four of its past five games, including a three-game sweep at home against Seattle from May 25-27. The Athletics are 2-5 in their past seven road games. Chicago has alternated wins and losses over its past six games. The Cubs are 4-3 in their past seven home games and have won three of their past four series at Wrigley Field. A computer projection from Interstat’s game simulator forecasts a 4-3 victory for the Cubs. The teams continue the three-game series Wednesday and Thursday before Oakland travels to Houston and Chicago hosts San Francisco.
