ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals meet Saturday at Busch Stadium III, with the Cubs looking to rebound from a narrow 5-4 loss in the series opener Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 77 degrees. Chicago (31-26) will start right-hander Kyle Leahy (5-3), who has been the Cubs’ most consistent starter this season. His counterpart for St. Louis (29-25) has not yet been announced. The Cubs enter having won three of their last four, including a 7-2 victory at Pittsburgh on Thursday. Right-hander Colin Rea earned the win in that game, allowing two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings while striking out five. Rea has been erratic this season, with a 2-2 record in his last five starts and a 4.32 ERA over that span, but he has been effective at limiting damage when his command is sharp. St. Louis is coming off a 2-1 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday. Right-hander Dustin May took a tough no-decision, allowing one earned run over seven innings while striking out nine. Over his last five starts, May is 1-3 with a 3.56 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings, but has received minimal run support. The Cardinals have lost four straight games, including a three-game sweep at Milwaukee to open the week. Their offense has struggled, scoring three runs or fewer in six of their last seven contests. Saturday’s game is the second of a three-game series between the National League Central rivals. St. Louis took the opener 5-4 on Friday, snapping Chicago’s two-game winning streak at Busch. The Cubs are listed as slight pregame favorites, with a spread of minus-1.5 runs. The over-under is set at 8. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 3-2 Cardinals victory. For the Cubs, the series continues Sunday before they return home to host the Athletics on Tuesday. The Cardinals host the Rangers on Monday after closing out this series Sunday. Leahy has been sharp of late, posting a 2.70 ERA over his last three starts. The Cubs will need him to navigate a St. Louis lineup that has been pressing to break out of its recent slide. May, meanwhile, has been the Cardinals’ most dependable starter and will aim to reverse the team’s momentum. The game marks the 10th meeting between the clubs this season, with St. Louis holding a 6-3 edge in the series so far.
