AP Sports Preview SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres look to rebound from a shutout loss Monday night when they host the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. PDT at PETCO Park. San Diego (31-21) holds a five-game lead in the National League West, despite dropping a 3-0 decision to Philadelphia on May 25. The Padres also lost Sunday’s series finale 5-2 to Oakland, but remain one of the league’s top clubs. Philadelphia (26-27) enters with modest momentum after snapping a four-game losing streak with Monday’s victory. The Phillies dropped two of three to Cleveland over the weekend, including a 3-1 loss Sunday. Right-hander Aaron Nola (2-4, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound for Philadelphia. He will be opposed by San Diego right-hander Griffin Canning, who is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA. Players to watch Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter has been a bright spot despite his team’s struggles. Over his last three starts, Painter has allowed five earned runs in 17.1 innings (2.60 ERA) with 10 strikeouts, including a solid 6.1-inning effort Sunday against Cleveland in which he allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Padres right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio has been effective in recent outings. Over his last four appearances, covering 7.2 innings, Marinaccio has allowed one earned run (1.17 ERA) with five strikeouts. Recent results The Phillies took Monday’s opener 3-0. Tyler Phillips earned the win, and the bullpen combined for 3.2 scoreless innings. Philadelphia snapped a four-game slide. San Diego managed just two hits Monday. The Padres have scored two runs or fewer in three of their last four games. Betting line Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Padres victory. San Diego opened as a -1.5 favorite, with an over/under of 7.5 runs. Upcoming schedule Following Tuesday’s game, the series concludes Wednesday afternoon. Philadelphia then travels to Los Angeles for three games at Dodger Stadium starting Friday. San Diego heads to Washington for a three-game set against the Nationals beginning Friday. The two clubs will meet again June 2-4 in Philadelphia.
