AP Baseball Preview: Padres at Giants SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres, owners of the best record in the National League West at 20-13, visit the last-place San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night at Oracle Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT. Right-hander Walker Buehler (1-2, 4.91 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego. He has struggled with consistency this season, walking four batters in each of his last two outings. The Giants will counter with their own right-hander, Tyler Mahle (3-3, 4.25), who has been erratic but dominant in his better starts. The Padres enter the game on a high note, having taken two of three from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend. Right-hander Griffin Canning earned the win Sunday, allowing one earned run over five innings with seven strikeouts in a 4-3 victory. Third baseman Manny Machado also homered in that game, going 2 for 4. San Francisco has lost four straight, most recently dropping a 2-1 decision in 10 innings at Tampa Bay on Sunday. Mahle was sharp in that start, permitting no earned runs over 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, but the bullpen could not hold the lead. The Giants have the worst record in the NL at 13-21. The teams played a scoreless tie Monday, their first meeting since San Diego won three of four in a season-opening series at Petco Park from March 30 to April 1. The Padres won the last completed contest 7-1. A simulation by Interstat projects a 4-2 victory for San Diego. Player to watch for the Padres: Griffin Canning, who also pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a win over the Chicago Cubs on April 27. For the Giants: Tyler Mahle, who shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers over seven innings on April 22. The game begins a two-game set, after which San Diego returns home to host St. Louis on Thursday, and San Francisco opens a three-game series against Pittsburgh on Friday.
