PHILADELPHIA – The Carolina Hurricanes look to complete a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Carolina, the No. 2 seed, carries a 3-0 series lead after Thursday’s 1-0 victory in Philadelphia. The Hurricanes (59-29-0) have stifled the Flyers’ offense throughout the series, allowing just two goals in three games. Goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 34 of 36 shots in Monday’s 3-2 overtime win and recorded a shutout in Game 1. The Flyers (47-43-0), the No. 7 seed, face elimination after losing three consecutive games. Philadelphia managed only 14 shots in a 3-0 loss Saturday. The Flyers’ season-long inconsistency (Interstat) — they finished 12 games under .500 (Interstat) — has been exposed by Carolina’s speed and defensive structure. Players to watch Carolina center Jordan Staal has been a physical presence, recording an assist and a hit in the series. Over his past four games, Staal has two points, six shots on goal and nine penalty minutes. His net-front work and penalty-killing remain critical for the Hurricanes. Philadelphia center Sean Couturier leads the Flyers with five shots on goal in the series. He scored in Monday’s loss, giving him three goals and four assists over his past nine games. Couturier’s two-way play must elevate for Philadelphia to extend the series. Series history The teams have traded home-ice advantages. Carolina won both games in Philadelphia (3-2 in OT, 1-0). The Flyers won a shootout in the regular-season finale April 13. The Hurricanes have won six of the past nine meetings. Up next If the series continues, Game 5 is Monday in Raleigh, North Carolina. The winner advances to the second round. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Eastern.
