Rangers, Flyers Meet at MSG in Battle of Struggling Metropolitan Division Foes NEW YORK (Interstat) — Two teams looking to salvage disappointing seasons will meet Thursday night when the Philadelphia Flyers visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Both clubs enter the matchup well outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The Flyers (25-31-0, 50 points) sit seventh in the Metropolitan Division, while the Rangers (22-35-0, 44 points) are last. The game is the third of four meetings this season, with New York having won the first two. The Rangers earned a 6-3 victory in Philadelphia on Jan. 17 and a 5-4 shootout win at home on Dec. 20. New York has lost three straight since that Jan. 17 win, however, including a 2-0 shutout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 5. Goaltender Jonathan Quick made 41 saves in that defeat, but the Rangers’ offense was blanked. Philadelphia also last played on Feb. 5, falling 2-1 in overtime to the Ottawa Senators. Goaltender Daniel Vladar stopped 25 shots, and defenseman Jamie Drysdale scored the Flyers’ lone goal. The loss snapped a brief two-game point streak (1-0-1) for Philadelphia, which has lost seven of its last 10 contests. Recent form has been a challenge for both sides. The Flyers are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. The Rangers are 2-8-0 over the same span, having been outscored 38-22. According to National Statistical’s game simulator, the Rangers are projected to win a low-scoring affair, 2-1. The game kicks off a critical home-and-home sequence between the division rivals. They will meet again in Philadelphia on Monday, March 9. Following Thursday’s contest, the Rangers will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. The Flyers will return home to face the Boston Bruins that same night.
