WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Interstat) — Two teams at the bottom of the NHL standings will look to find a rare positive result when the Winnipeg Jets visit the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night at Rogers Arena. The Jets (22-34-0) and Canucks (18-39-0) enter the contest with the two poorest records in the league, combining for just 40 wins through more than four months of the season. The matchup represents a chance for one club to build momentum during a difficult campaign. Winnipeg arrives after a dispiriting 5-1 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 4, a game in which only Kyle Connor’s goal and a 22-save performance from Connor Hellebuyck provided bright spots. The Jets have lost three of their last four, though they did manage a 2-1 road victory over the Florida Panthers on Jan. 31 during that stretch. Vancouver is mired in a deeper slump, having lost five consecutive games since a 2-0 win over Anaheim on Jan. 29. The Canucks are coming off a 5-2 defeat in Vegas on Feb. 4, where Teddy Blueger recorded two assists. They have been outscored 24-8 during their five-game skid. Recent history favors the Jets, who defeated the Canucks 5-3 in Vancouver on Nov. 11 in the teams’ only previous meeting this season. Winnipeg has shown a capacity for sporadic offensive bursts, including a 6-2 win in Minnesota on Jan. 15, but consistency has eluded them. For Vancouver, defensive stability has been the primary issue. The team has allowed four or more goals in seven of its last ten games, including a 6-0 shutout loss to Edmonton on Jan. 17. The game opens a three-game Western Canada road trip for the Jets, who will face Anaheim and San Jose after this contest. The Canucks will embark on a short two-game trip to Seattle and Chicago following Wednesday’s game, before hosting Dallas next Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST. The teams will meet again in Winnipeg on Saturday, March 7.
