BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — Two Atlantic Division teams heading in opposite directions will meet Saturday when the Buffalo Sabres host the Boston Bruins at KeyBank Center. The Sabres (18-18-0) enter the matchup riding a season-high five-game winning streak, including a 3-2 overtime victory in Ottawa on Tuesday. Defenseman Bowen Byram was the catalyst in that win, scoring two goals and adding an assist. He has been a force during the streak, recording three goals and four points in his last five games. Conversely, the Bruins (20-18-0) are mired in a slump, having lost four of their last five, including a 6-2 home defeat to Montreal on Tuesday. In that loss, forward Alex Steeves provided a rare bright spot with a goal. Steeves has shown sporadic offensive flashes, with four goals in his last 10 contests, but Boston has been outscored 27-9 during its four recent losses. The season series favors Boston, which won both prior meetings in October—a 3-1 victory on Oct. 11 and a 4-3 overtime win on Oct. 30. Buffalo’s resurgence has been keyed by strong goaltending and balanced scoring. During their five-game run, the Sabres have allowed just 2.2 goals per game. Boston, meanwhile, is searching for consistency, particularly defensively, after allowing four or more goals in four of its last five outings. A key matchup will feature the hot hand of Buffalo’s Byram against Boston’s top line. The Bruins will need more from their core players to snap their skid and keep pace in the Eastern Conference wild-card race. For the Sabres, a win would push them back to .500 and continue their climb up the division standings. Saturday’s contest is the first of a back-to-back road set for Boston, which travels to Calgary on Monday. Buffalo begins a two-game trip in St. Louis on Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
