Preview: Devils Visit Mammoth in Interconference Clash SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — Two teams looking to stabilize their seasons will meet Friday night when the New Jersey Devils visit the Utah Mammoth at Delta Center. The Devils (18-15-0) arrive after a 2-1 loss to Vancouver on Sunday snapped a brief win streak. Their recent form has been inconsistent, with a 3-7-0 record over their last 10 games. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 13 saves on 15 shots in the loss to the Canucks. Utah (16-19-0) is also seeking consistency, coming off a 4-1 road loss to Boston on Tuesday. The Mammoth have shown flashes, including a 5-4 overtime win in Pittsburgh on Dec. 14, but have lost four of their last six. A key matchup will feature New Jersey’s dynamic young defenseman Luke Hughes against Utah’s two-way center Kevin Stenlund. Hughes has been a bright spot for the Devils, registering a goal and an assist over his last three games, including a goal on a team-high five shots against Vancouver. His offensive activation from the blue line will be a primary concern for Utah. Stenlund provides a different dimension for the Mammoth. The center is coming off a three-assist performance in a win over Seattle on Dec. 12 and had a goal and an assist in a victory over Vancouver on Dec. 5. His responsible play in all zones will be tasked with helping contain New Jersey’s speed. In net, Markstrom is expected to start for New Jersey. Utah’s goaltender was not specified. This game is the first of a home-and-home set between the clubs, who will meet again in New Jersey on Jan. 3. For the Devils, this begins a two-game road trip before returning home to face Buffalo on Sunday. The Mammoth continue a homestand that will see them host Winnipeg on Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST.
