VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Interstat) — The Vancouver Canucks will look to build on a rare winning streak when they visit the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Friday night. The Canucks (13-20-0) have won two straight, including a 3-0 shutout of the New York Rangers on Tuesday, after a prolonged slump. Their success has been fueled by goaltender Thatcher Demko, who has stopped 48 of 49 shots in his last two starts, both victories. “We’re simplifying our game and getting saves when we need them,” said Vancouver coach. “Thatcher is giving us a chance every night.” Demko’s recent surge provides a glimmer of hope for a team that has struggled to find consistency. Forwards Liam Ohgren and Evander Kane each scored in the win over the Rangers. The Islanders (19-15-0), sitting in a playoff position in the Eastern Conference, aim to rebound after a 3-2 loss in Detroit on Tuesday. Winger Emil Heineman scored his second goal in three games in the defeat and has been a physical presence, recording five hits against the Red Wings. “We need to get back to our identity at home,” said Islanders captain. “That means starting fast and playing a full 60 minutes.” New York has been strong on home ice at Belmont Park, winning three of its last four at UBS Arena. The Islanders hold a significant edge in the standings over the Canucks, who sit near the bottom of the Western Conference. Vancouver’s challenge will be generating offense against a structured Islanders team while relying on Demko to counter New York’s attack. The Canucks continue a four-game road trip in Boston on Saturday. The Islanders head to Buffalo for a game Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
