BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) ā A rubber match with season-ending stakes is set for the American Athletic Conference Womenās Basketball Championship on Tuesday when seed Tulane faces seed Temple. The Green Wave (11-18) and Owls (14-16) split their regular-season series, with each winning on the otherās home court. Temple earned a 67-65 overtime victory in New Orleans on Jan. 31, avenging a 71-58 loss in Philadelphia on Jan. 13. Both teams enter the postseason looking to halt late slides. Tulane has lost three of its last four, including a 49-58 defeat to South Florida on Saturday. Templeās recent form is checkered, with a dominant 84-56 win over Florida Atlantic last time out preceded by a 36-82 road loss to South Florida. The matchup will feature two of the conferenceās top performers. Tulaneās Mecailin Marshall is coming off a standout 18-point, 11-rebound double-double against USF and has explosive scoring potential, as shown by a 34-point outburst against East Carolina on Feb. 10. For Temple, Savannah Curry provides consistent production, averaging 13.4 points over her last five games. She posted 21 points in a win at Charlotte on Feb. 17 and 18 points with 8 rebounds against East Carolina. Templeās offense, which put up 86 points in a win at UAB on Feb. 28, will test a Tulane defense that has allowed an average of 60.2 points per game during its recent 1-3 stretch. The Owls won the rebounding battle 45-37 in their overtime win over the Green Wave last month, a key factor likely to be emphasized again. The winner advances to face seed South Florida in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. For two teams with sub-.500 records, the conference tournament represents a final opportunity to salvage their seasons and build momentum. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. EDT at Legacy Arena.
