BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — A surging Montana State looks to continue its dominant run through the Big Sky Conference when it faces Eastern Washington in a women’s basketball tournament matchup Tuesday at CenturyLink Arena. The second-seeded Bobcats (24-6) enter as heavy favorites, having won 12 of their last 13 games, including a 78-57 rout of rival Montana on March 8. Their only loss since early February came in overtime at Idaho. Montana State’s balanced attack is led by guard Taylee Chirrick, who averaged 15.1 points over the final eight regular-season games and dished out six assists in the recent win over Montana. The seventh-seeded Eagles (15-17) advanced with a 55-53 victory over Northern Colorado on Monday, snapping a three-game skid. They face a quick turnaround against a team that has beaten them twice this season by a combined five points. Montana State won 71-69 in Cheney on Feb. 7 and 72-70 in overtime in Bozeman on Jan. 8. Eastern Washington will rely on forward Kourtney Grossman, who posted a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double against Portland State on Feb. 21 and has scored in double figures in eight consecutive games. She had 11 points in Monday’s narrow win. Montana State’s defense, which held opponents under 55 points in four of its last five wins, will aim to contain Grossman and force others to score. The Bobcats won the regular-season meeting in Bozeman despite Eastern Washington’s Jaecy Eggers scoring 26 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MDT. The winner will advance to the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
