ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — The surging New Mexico Lobos will look to solidify their standing near the top of the Mountain West when they host the struggling Fresno State Bulldogs in a women’s basketball matchup Tuesday afternoon at The Pit. New Mexico (21-9 overall) enters the contest having won five of its last six games, including a 63-56 road victory at Nevada on Saturday. The Lobos have been dominant at home this season, boasting a 12-2 record in Albuquerque. Fresno State (13-16) aims to halt a three-game skid and salvage its season finale. The Bulldogs are coming off a 54-68 home loss to UNLV on Saturday, a game in which they managed just 42 points in a loss to Grand Canyon three days prior. Their recent road form shows a split, with a win at Utah State on Feb. 15 preceded by a loss at San Diego State. A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top guards. New Mexico is led by Cacia Antonio, who is averaging 15.4 points over her last five games. She scored a team-high 18 points in the win over Nevada. For Fresno State, Danae Powell has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 16.1 points over her last seven contests. She poured in 21 points in the Bulldogs’ win at Utah State earlier this month. The Lobos won the first meeting this season, 68-57, in Fresno on Jan. 28. In that game, New Mexico’s defense forced 18 turnovers. Replicating that defensive pressure will be a focus against a Fresno State team that has been held under 60 points in four of its last five games. For New Mexico, a win would bolster its resume ahead of the Mountain West tournament. For Fresno State, it represents a final opportunity to gain momentum and an upset victory in a hostile environment before the postseason begins. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Tuesday at University Arena, known as The Pit.
