BELLARMINE SEEKS POSTSEASON MIRACLE AGAINST FAVORED FGCU IN ASUN TOURNAMENT JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) ā The Bellarmine Knights enter the ASUN Womenās Basketball Championship as the ultimate underdog, facing a familiar foe that handed them one of their most lopsided defeats of a difficult season. The Knights (2-29) will meet the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (15-14) in a first-round tournament game Tuesday at Jacksonvilleās Swisher Gymnasium. The matchup is a rematch of a Feb. 5 meeting in Fort Myers, where the Eagles dominated Bellarmine 79-40. Bellarmineās season has been defined by struggle, entering the postseason on a 13-game losing streak. Their most recent outing was a 100-43 defeat at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 27. The Knights rank near the bottom of Division I in several offensive categories. Their primary offensive threat is guard Kayce Hyman, who scored 19 points in that loss to Eastern Kentucky. Hyman averaged 12.5 points over her final eight regular-season games, including a 14-point effort in the prior loss to FGCU. She will need a monumental performance for Bellarmine to be competitive. Florida Gulf Coast, meanwhile, stabilized its season by winning three of its final four games to secure a winning record. The Eagles defeated Stetson 67-55 on Feb. 27 behind 16 points from Sinai Douglas and 15 from Nay Staton. Guard Eve Alexander, who had 10 points in that victory, also contributed 7 points in the February win over Bellarmine. The Eaglesā defense, which held the Knights to 40 points on 27.3% shooting last month, will look to replicate that intensity. The Eagles have shown inconsistency but possess the depth and defensive prowess that Bellarmine has lacked. FGCUās season sweep of the Knights, combined with the stark contrast in records, makes them an overwhelming favorite. For Bellarmine, the tournament represents a chance to reset after a long winter. For Florida Gulf Coast, it is an opportunity to build momentum and advance deeper into the conference bracket. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT.
