FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — A critical ASUN Conference women’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Friday night when the North Alabama Lions host the West Georgia Wolves at Flowers Hall. Both teams enter the regular-season finale seeking momentum for the upcoming conference tournament. West Georgia (17-11 overall) holds a slightly better record than North Alabama (15-12), but the Lions won the previous meeting this season, 65-60, on Feb. 11 in Carrollton, Georgia. That recent history adds a layer of urgency for the visiting Wolves, who have lost two straight, including a 72-62 defeat at Queens (N.C.) on Tuesday. West Georgia will lean on guard Grace O’Gara, who scored 16 points in that loss and poured in a team-high 18 in the earlier loss to North Alabama. Over her last five games, O’Gara is averaging 13.6 points and 3.2 assists. North Alabama arrives with more rhythm, having won two consecutive games, most recently a 68-63 home victory over Lipscomb on Feb. 21. Forward Gabby Jackson led the Lions with 15 points in that win and is coming off a dominant 13-point, 9-rebound, 4-assist performance in a rout of Bellarmine on Feb. 18. Her versatility will be key against a West Georgia frontcourt. The Wolves have shown they can win on the road, with notable victories at Austin Peay and Lipscomb this month, but consistency has been an issue. Their offense, which scored 95 points in a win on Feb. 14, was held to 60 or fewer in three of their last four losses. For North Alabama, defense has been the cornerstone; they have held opponents under 70 points in eight of their last nine games. Replicating their defensive effort from the first matchup, where they forced West Georgia into a 35.7% shooting night, will be the blueprint. Friday’s result will finalize seeding for the ASUN Championship, with both teams jockeying for position. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST.
