JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — A surging Arkansas State women’s basketball team will look to solidify its standing and complete a regular-season sweep when it hosts struggling Texas State in a Sun Belt Conference matchup Friday night at Convocation Center. The Red Wolves (22-8, 11-6 Sun Belt) enter the contest having won five of their last seven games, despite a 54-61 home loss to Troy on Tuesday. They previously dominated Texas State 75-61 in San Marcos on Feb. 18. Arkansas State’s offense is powered by guard Zyion Shannon, who scored 22 points in the first meeting with the Bobcats. Shannon averages 12.4 points per game over her last five contests. Texas State (11-16, 6-11) seeks to halt a three-game skid and gain momentum before the conference tournament. The Bobcats fell 59-64 to South Alabama last Saturday and have lost seven of their last nine. Their fortunes hinge heavily on forward Kyra Anderson, who is coming off a 14-point, 8-rebound performance against South Alabama. Anderson has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in 12 consecutive games, including a 21-point, 15-rebound effort at Georgia State on Jan. 31. The Feb. 18 meeting was defined by Arkansas State’s defensive pressure, which forced 18 Texas State turnovers. The Red Wolves also held a decisive 38-24 advantage in points in the paint. For Texas State to reverse the outcome, limiting turnovers and finding secondary scoring behind Anderson will be critical. Deja Jones, who had 15 points in the last game, is a key complementary piece. Arkansas State, currently second in the Sun Belt standings, aims to protect its home court, where it is 13-2 this season. Texas State, near the bottom of the conference, is fighting to improve its seeding for the upcoming Sun Belt Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
