PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — The Brown Bears will look to solidify their position in the Ivy League standings when they host the Cornell Big Red in a women’s basketball matchup Friday at Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown (15-8) enters the contest riding a wave of stronger performances, having won four of its last six games. That stretch includes a 68-62 victory over Harvard on Feb. 14. The Bears stumbled in their last outing, a 69-37 loss at Princeton on Feb. 21, but have proven formidable at home in conference play. A key contributor for the Bears is Alyssa Moreland, who provides consistent production on both ends of the floor. In a win over Yale on Feb. 7, Moreland posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Her defensive presence was notable in a recent loss to Princeton, where she blocked three shots. Cornell (8-16) seeks to snap a five-game losing streak, with its last win coming in overtime against Penn on Jan. 30. The Big Red are coming off a 74-37 defeat at Harvard on Feb. 21, a game in which they struggled offensively. Guard Willa Chinn led Cornell in that loss with five points, four rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes. The season series favors Brown, which defeated Cornell 64-48 in Ithaca on Jan. 17. In that game, the Bears’ defense held the Big Red to 30% shooting from the field. For Brown, a victory would bolster its resume ahead of a Saturday matchup against Columbia. Cornell, aiming to play spoiler, will need a significant offensive improvement to challenge the Bears before traveling to face Yale the following day. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
