STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A pivotal Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Thursday when the Utah Valley Wolverines visit the Tarleton State Texans at Wisdom Gym. Both teams enter with identical 12-12 records in all competitions, though Tarleton State is 12-14 overall. The contest is a quick rematch of a Jan. 29 thriller in Orem, where Utah Valley held on for a 70-67 victory. The Wolverines have won the last two meetings, including a 74-49 decision on Jan. 1. Utah Valley arrives with momentum from a 77-60 home win over Texas-Arlington on Saturday. The Wolverines have won three of their last four games. Player to watch Halle Nelson is coming off a dominant performance, nearly recording a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists against UTA. The versatile forward has been a consistent defensive presence, recording multiple blocks in four of her last six outings. Tarleton State looks to snap a three-game skid, most recently a 76-55 loss at Utah Tech. The Texans will lean on guard Jakoriah Long, who has been a volume scorer despite the team’s struggles. Long has topped 20 points in three of her last five games, including a 24-point effort in a win over Southern Utah on Feb. 7. She was held to just four points in the first meeting with Utah Valley this season. The matchup features contrasting styles. Utah Valley has shown recent defensive grit, holding three straight opponents under 62 points. Tarleton State will aim to push the tempo at home, where they are 8-5 this season compared to a 4-9 road mark. A win would give either team a critical advantage in the crowded WAC standings as the regular season enters its final stretch. Utah Valley continues its Texas road trip at Abilene Christian on Saturday. Tarleton State hosts California Baptist that same day. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST Thursday at Wisdom Gym.
