Preview: Texas A&M-Commerce at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — Two Southland Conference women’s basketball teams heading in opposite directions will meet Thursday when the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions visit the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at American Bank Center. Commerce (12-13) has lost three straight but remains in the middle of the conference pack. The Lions started February with a four-game winning streak before the recent skid, which includes a 61-71 home loss to Incarnate Word on Saturday. In that game, J’Unti Franklin posted 10 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes, while Nina Horvath led the team with 15 points. Corpus Christi (5-21) has struggled throughout the season, though it snapped a five-game losing streak with a 76-69 road win over Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 19. The Islanders are coming off a 55-72 loss at McNeese State, where Marissa Shelton scored 20 points in 40 minutes of action. Shelton, a key player for the Islanders, has been a consistent offensive threat, logging 40 minutes and scoring 20 or more points twice in her last five outings. The Lions won the previous meeting this season, 65-60 at home on Jan. 8. Commerce has relied on a more balanced record, while Corpus Christi seeks to improve its standing at home, where it is 3-9 this season. Franklin’s production off the bench will be a factor for Commerce. In her last five games, she is averaging 5.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in limited minutes, providing energy in spurts. For the Islanders, containing Commerce’s interior presence and finding consistent scoring beyond Shelton will be critical. K’Nari Holliday, who had 18 points and seven rebounds against McNeese State, is another important piece. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST. Commerce visits Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, while Corpus Christi hosts Northwestern State the same day.
