LEIPSIC, Del. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to escape the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference cellar will meet Thursday when the Delaware State Hornets host the South Carolina State Bulldogs in a women’s basketball matchup at Memorial Hall. Both teams enter with identical 5-21 overall records. The game is a quick rematch of a Jan. 22 meeting in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where Delaware State secured a decisive 67-47 victory. The Hornets arrive with momentum from their most recent outing, a 74-59 road win over Morgan State on Saturday. Guard Jermesha Frierson led the way with 20 points and three assists in that victory. Frierson has been a consistent scorer for Delaware State, averaging 13.2 points over her last six games. South Carolina State, conversely, is mired in a seven-game losing streak following an 93-52 defeat at Norfolk State on Saturday. During the skid, the Bulldogs have struggled offensively, failing to reach 70 points in any contest. The Bulldogs will lean on guard Lemyiah Harris, their most potent offensive threat. Harris is averaging 14.2 points per game over her last six outings, including a 23-point performance at Howard on Feb. 7. She scored 16 points in the previous loss to Norfolk State. For Delaware State, containing Harris will be a focal point. In the January win over South Carolina State, the Hornets’ defense forced the Bulldogs into a low-scoring performance. The matchup pits two teams with mirroring records but contrasting recent trajectories. Delaware State will look to build on its latest win and complete a season sweep, while South Carolina State aims to snap its prolonged slump and find a conference road victory.
