SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Two of the West Coast Conference’s hottest teams will meet Thursday when the Loyola Marymount Lions visit the San Francisco Dons in a pivotal late-season women’s basketball matchup. The Lions (19-8, 11-1 WCC) enter War Memorial Gymnasium riding an eight-game winning streak, the latest a 74-61 victory over San Diego on Saturday. The Dons (16-11, 7-5), meanwhile, are coming off a dramatic 61-60 overtime road win at Saint Mary’s. This contest is a rematch of a Jan. 4 thriller, which San Francisco won 85-82 in overtime at Loyola Marymount. The Lions will be looking to avenge that loss and solidify their standing atop the conference. A key matchup will feature two of the league’s top performers. Loyola Marymount is led by guard Andjela Matic, who is averaging 16.1 points and 3.6 assists during the winning streak. She scored 23 points with five assists in the win over San Diego. San Francisco counters with guard Candy Edokpaigbe, who has been on a scoring tear. She poured in 28 points in the overtime win at Saint Mary’s, her third 28-point performance in the last six games. She averages 22.1 points per game in that span. The Lions’ surge has been built on consistent offense, scoring at least 72 points in seven of their eight consecutive wins. The Dons have shown resilience, with four of their last seven games decided by six points or fewer or in overtime. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST Thursday at War Memorial Gymnasium. Loyola Marymount visits Oregon State on Saturday, while San Francisco travels to face Santa Clara.
