Preview: Wichita State at UAB Women’s Basketball BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — Two American Athletic Conference teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the UAB Blazers host the Wichita State Shockers in a women’s basketball matchup at Bartow Arena. The game is a quick rematch, as UAB (10-16) defeated Wichita State (6-21) 83-65 on Jan. 31 in Wichita. The Blazers have lost three of four since that victory, including a 59-55 defeat at Tulsa last Friday. The Shockers, meanwhile, are coming off one of their best performances of the season, a 62-61 home win over Texas-San Antonio on Feb. 21 that snapped a four-game skid. Wichita State will look to sophomore guard Jaila Harding to build on her recent form. Harding scored a team-high 19 points in the win over UTSA and has been a consistent offensive threat, averaging 16.4 points over her last five games. In the Jan. 31 loss to UAB, she was held to nine points. UAB counters with senior guard Sofia Munoz, who scored 14 points in the first meeting against the Shockers. Munoz has reached double figures in four of her last five games, including a 14-point, three-assist effort in the loss to Tulsa. Both teams have struggled defensively this season. Wichita State allows an average of 74.2 points per game, while UAB surrenders 70.8. The Blazers’ offense, which produced 83 points in the first matchup, will test a Shockers defense that has allowed 80 or more points seven times this season. For Wichita State, finding secondary scoring behind Harding will be crucial. Diamond Richardson and Abby Cater combined for 23 points in the win over UTSA. UAB will rely on Monae Duffy and Cali Smallwood, who combined for 19 points in the previous meeting, to support Munoz. The game is part of the final stretch of the regular season. UAB sits 11th in the AAC standings, while Wichita State is 13th. Following this contest, UAB will host Temple on Saturday, and Wichita State will travel to face Tulane. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at Bartow Arena.
