Preview: UMKC Kangaroos at Saint Thomas Tommies ST. PAUL, Minn. (Interstat) — The Saint Thomas Tommies look to solidify their position in the Summit League standings and avenge an earlier loss when they host the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos in a women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies (14-12 overall) enter on a four-game winning streak, their latest a 70-58 road victory at North Dakota on Feb. 21. Guard Jada Hood has been a catalyst during the run, averaging 12 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5 assists over the last four contests. In the win over North Dakota, she nearly posted a triple-double with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Saint Thomas will seek a different result from the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 17, when UMKC secured a 75-60 win in Kansas City. In that game, the Kangaroos limited the Tommies to 32.8% shooting from the field. UMKC (7-21) arrives struggling, having lost six of its last seven games. The Kangaroos are coming off a narrow 70-68 home loss to Oral Roberts on Saturday, a game in which they led by 10 points in the fourth quarter. Guard Tierra Trotter scored 20 points in that defeat, continuing a strong individual stretch where she has averaged 16.1 points over her last seven games. Despite their record, the Kangaroos have shown they can compete, taking South Dakota to overtime on the road on Feb. 12 before falling 70-65. Containing Hood and reversing their recent fortunes on the road, where they are 2-11 this season, will be key challenges. For Saint Thomas, protecting its home court (9-4 this season) is paramount as it jockeys for seeding in the upcoming conference tournament. The Tommies have won three straight at Schoenecker Arena by an average margin of 24.3 points. Wednesday’s game is the only scheduled meeting between the programs this regular season. Saint Thomas visits Oral Roberts on Saturday, while UMKC’s next contest is also Feb. 28 at Denver. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST.
