Preview: Northwestern Wildcats at No. -- Maryland Terrapins COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland women’s basketball team, riding high in the Big Ten standings, will look to continue its dominant conference run when it hosts struggling Northwestern on Wednesday night at Xfinity Center. The Terrapins (22-6 overall) enter the matchup as heavy favorites, having won five of their last six games, including a 99-66 rout of Purdue on Sunday. They are powered by guard Oluchi Okananwa, who is coming off a 26-point performance in just 20 minutes against the Boilermakers. Over her last seven games, Okananwa is averaging 18.3 points, including a 27-point effort in a loss to Oregon and a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double in a narrow win at Ohio State. Northwestern (8-19) arrives mired in a seven-game losing streak, most recently a 92-65 home loss to Illinois on Sunday. The Wildcats have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 86.1 points during the skid. The Wildcats’ primary bright spot has been forward Tayla Thomas, who scored a career-high 25 points to go with six rebounds and two blocks in the loss to Illinois. Thomas has shown scoring bursts, with 19 points at Nebraska on Jan. 28, but Northwestern has lacked consistent secondary options. Maryland won the season’s first meeting, an 86-70 victory in Evanston on Jan. 4. Okananwa led the Terps with 22 points in that contest. The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST Wednesday as part of Big Ten conference play. Maryland will hit the road to face Michigan on Saturday. Northwestern’s next game is at home against Purdue on March 1.
