RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A surging La Salle looks to solidify its position in the Atlantic 10 standings when it visits a struggling VCU team in a women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Siegel Center. The Explorers (15-12, 9-5 A-10) enter on a 3-1 stretch in their last four games, with the lone loss a 92-58 setback at conference leader Richmond on Sunday. La Salle, which sits in the top half of the league table, will be heavily favored against a Rams squad mired in a prolonged slump. VCU (8-20, 3-11) has lost seven of its last eight games, including a 72-61 defeat at Duquesne last Saturday. The Rams’ defense has been a particular concern, allowing an average of 71.4 points per game during that eight-game stretch. La Salle guard Ashleigh Connor, the team’s engine, will be a primary focus. She is averaging 16.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists over her last seven contests, including a 26-point performance in a win at Duquesne on Jan. 31. Connor scored 15 points and dished five assists in the loss to Richmond. For VCU, forward Katarina Knezevic has been a consistent bright spot. She has recorded four double-doubles in her last seven games, including an 18-point, 10-rebound effort against Saint Bonaventure on Feb. 14. Knezevic is averaging a near double-double of 12.4 points and 9.3 rebounds over that span. The teams met earlier this season in Philadelphia, where La Salle earned a 70-62 victory on Dec. 3. The Explorers have won the last three head-to-head meetings. A win for La Salle would keep pressure on the teams above them in the conference race as the regular season winds down. For VCU, the game represents a chance to play spoiler and build momentum before visiting Dayton on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
