FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum for the stretch run will meet Wednesday when the Fresno State Bulldogs host the Grand Canyon Antelopes in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup at Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs (13-14) enter with a slight edge in overall record but have dropped two of their last three, including a 68-59 loss at San Diego State on Saturday. The Antelopes (10-17) snapped a three-game skid with a dominant 63-43 home win over Utah State that same day. Grand Canyon will look to continue its recent defensive intensity after holding Utah State to 43 points. A key factor will be the play of forward Julianna LaMendola, who is coming off a 14-point, 9-rebound performance and has been a consistent scorer. She has averaged 18.1 points over her last seven games, including a 26-point outing in a narrow loss at Air Force on Feb. 7. Fresno State counters with guard Emilia Long, who leads a Bulldogs offense that has shown potency, scoring 73 points or more in three of its last five wins. Long averaged 16.8 points over a recent four-game winning streak before being held to 14 in the loss to San Diego State. History favors Grand Canyon in the brief series. The Antelopes won the most recent meeting, 71-64, in Phoenix on Jan. 10. For Fresno State, this game represents a chance to get back above .500 and gain confidence before returning to Mountain West play against UNLV. For Grand Canyon, it’s an opportunity to build a winning streak and improve its standing away from home. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST Wednesday. Fresno State will host UNLV on Saturday, while Grand Canyon returns home to face San Jose State the same day.
