Preview: Charleston Southern at Longwood Women’s Basketball FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Longwood Lancers look to solidify their standing near the top of the Big South Conference when they host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in a women’s basketball matchup Wednesday at Willet Hall. Longwood (18-9 overall) enters the contest having dropped three straight, including a double-overtime heartbreaker, 65-63, at South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. The Lancers will rely on forward Otaifo Esenabhalu, who pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds in that loss. Her presence in the paint will be critical against a Charleston Southern team that has struggled offensively for much of the season. The visiting Buccaneers (8-19) have lost five of their last six games and are coming off a 92-78 home loss to Radford on Saturday. Their fortunes rest heavily on the performance of guard Tyonna Bailey, who is in the midst of a stellar individual stretch. Bailey is averaging 20.9 points over her last seven games, including a 28-point outing in a win at Upstate and a 26-point, 13-rebound performance in a victory over Presbyterian on Feb. 7. In the teams’ first meeting this season on Jan. 7, Longwood dominated Charleston Southern, 83-63, on the Buccaneers’ home floor. The Lancers have used a balanced attack and strong defense to build a successful season, while Charleston Southern has frequently relied on Bailey’s scoring to remain competitive. The matchup pits one of the conference’s top teams against one near the bottom, but the Lancers’ recent skid and Bailey’s explosive capability provide intrigue. Longwood will aim to leverage its home court and interior strength to halt its losing streak before closing the regular season at Presbyterian on Saturday. Charleston Southern seeks an upset to build momentum before hosting Winthrop this weekend. Tip-off is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
