TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt prolonged slides will meet Tuesday when the Houston Cougars visit the Arizona Wildcats in a Big 12 women’s basketball matchup at McKale Center. Houston (7-20) enters on a five-game losing streak following an 81-56 defeat at Arizona State on Saturday. The Cougars have lost 10 of their last 11 contests, with their lone victory in that span a 72-70 home win over Cincinnati on Feb. 1. Guard TK Pitts, a player to watch for Houston, is coming off a 13-point, 7-rebound performance against the Sun Devils and scored 16 points in a loss at Kansas on Feb. 14. Arizona (11-16) has also struggled, dropping its last four games, including a 74-60 loss at Baylor on Saturday. The Wildcats’ last win was a 72-62 victory over Kansas State on Feb. 4. They will lean on guard Lani Cornfield, who has been a bright spot during the skid. Cornfield poured in 25 points and dished 8 assists in a loss to Colorado on Feb. 17 and followed that with 24 points and 6 assists in an overtime loss to rival Arizona State. The matchup pits two of the conference’s lower-tier teams against each other as the regular season winds down. Houston’s offense has sputtered, failing to reach 70 points in any of its last six games. Arizona has shown more offensive capability but has been plagued by defensive lapses, allowing an average of 80.5 points during its current four-game losing streak. Tuesday’s game represents a critical opportunity for both squads to build momentum before their final regular-season contests. Houston will host UCF on March 1, while Arizona travels to face Utah on Feb. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at McKale Center.
