Preview: Mississippi Valley State Devilettes at Grambling Lady Tigers GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum for the stretch run will meet Monday night when the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes visit the Grambling Lady Tigers in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game. The Devilettes (6-19) enter on a high note after a 78-64 home victory over Texas Southern on Saturday, their second consecutive win following a six-game skid. Guard Jaeda Murphy, the team’s player to watch, powered that effort with 22 points, four rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes. Over her last eight games, Murphy is averaging 12.1 points and 4.5 assists. Grambling (9-17) seeks to rebound from a 59-45 road loss to rival Southern on Saturday. The Lady Tigers had won three of their previous four before the defeat. Forward Alisha Murray, Grambling’s key player, recorded a double-double in the loss with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Her production has been variable, but she posted 15 points and five rebounds in a narrow loss to Jackson State on Jan. 31. The matchup features two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s lower-tier teams battling for positioning ahead of the conference tournament. Mississippi Valley State’s recent surge, led by Murphy and supported by Sydnei Marshall (14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists vs. Texas Southern) and Janiya Jones (13 points, 8 rebounds), has provided a late-season bright spot. Grambling will rely on its recent home success, where it defeated Alabama State 67-53 on Feb. 7. The Lady Tigers’ defense held Texas Southern to 50 points in a road win on Feb. 14, a formula they will need to replicate to contain Murphy and the Devilettes’ emerging backcourt. Monday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this regular season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CST at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
