ROSEMONT, Ill. (Interstat) — Two Big East women’s basketball teams seeking to halt slides will meet Sunday when the Xavier Musketeers visit the DePaul Blue Demons at Allstate Arena. Xavier (11-15) has lost five of its last six games, including a 55-64 home loss to Seton Hall on Wednesday. The Musketeers’ offense has struggled during the stretch, failing to reach 60 points in four of those contests. They will lean on guard Meri Kanerva, who has been a consistent minutes leader. Kanerva is coming off a 9-point, 8-assist performance against Seton Hall and averaged 37.1 minutes over her last seven games. DePaul (6-22) has found wins scarce, dropping 10 of its last 12. The Blue Demons fell 60-66 at Providence on Wednesday despite a standout 23-point effort from Kate Novik. The guard has been a bright spot, scoring 20 or more points in three of her last seven outings, including a 20-point, 5-assist game in a 72-68 win over Saint John’s on Feb. 10. The teams last met on Jan. 13 in Cincinnati, where Xavier secured a 71-61 victory. The Musketeers have historically controlled the recent series, winning the last five matchups. For Xavier, ending its recent offensive droughts will be critical. Beyond Kanerva, MacKenzie Givens, who scored 19 points against Seton Hall, provides a secondary scoring option. DePaul will need another high-output game from Novik and improved defensive execution after allowing an average of 78.8 points in its last five losses. Sunday’s game represents one of the remaining opportunities for both squads to build momentum before the Big East tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST. Xavier visits Marquette next on Wednesday, while DePaul hosts Butler the same night.
